The first in a series ...DOG ON IT by Spencer Flynn. The first in a series written from the point of view of Chet the Dog who's owner / 'partner' is a private detective named Bernie. The is one of my favorite books ever. Favorite series too. The second book, THEREBY HANGS A TAIL was wonderful as well. And I'm waiting for the third, TO FETCH A THIEF. Despite the cute titles, the books are NOT cutesy-poo at all, this is their charm. In a way I can hardly define, they're uncomplicated but brilliant. Obviously written by a man who understands dogs in a very special way. I'd also recommend ONE GOOD DOG by Susan Wilson. And the non-fiction, DOGS NEVER LIE ABOUT LOVE by Jeffrey Moussaieff Masson. (I tried to get into The Story of Edgar Sawtelle but lost interest. I may yet try it again at some point.)Yvettehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08919246184376538331noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5060047013304842896.post-87551907651253500442010-08-30T22:22:30.313-05:002010-08-30T22:22:30.313-05:00I'm another who thought Edgar Sawtelle was jus...I'm another who thought Edgar Sawtelle was just OK. And after seeing the film adaptaton of M&M? Let's just say I was so distraught, I had to go home. As in, said good night to friends with whom I was supposed to get drinks; barely made it back to my own house; curled up in bed and didn't want to come out.

Needless to say, I shy away from dog books.

And not because I don't love them... but because I do. A refreshing memoir though...

You know, I never caught on that the Sawtelle book was about Hamlet until I read that, about a year after I read the book. ??? How's that for a perceptive reviewer?

The Dogs of Babel was terribly creepy...

Ape was right on with Travels with Charley...loved that one!

As far as training, just remember that dogs love a sense of structure. Routines are big with them, and rewarding good behavior works better than after-the-fact punishment. They want to please...too bad my kids weren't better trained!

Have fun with the pup (and hide him from your shoes!)
AmyAmyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06982753200241942817noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5060047013304842896.post-76862696974279961372010-08-13T20:33:18.495-05:002010-08-13T20:33:18.495-05:00@2many books - Fantastic! I am a big Jack London fan, both for his treatment of dogs and his fascination with nature red in tooth and claw. White Fang is a great dog-lover's book. I also picked up a copy of his posthumous work, Michael, Brother of Jerry, just yesterday. I understand that it tells the story of a seafaring dog and treats the topic of cruelty in keeping animals as performers. The other is A Big Little Life: A Memoir of a Joyful Dog by Dean Koontz--sounds quite different from his usual fare (although I can't help but wonder if the dog in the book that Joel recommended was modeled on Trixie from this book).
